I had my dream job in the morning and the reality of no back up plan by the end of the day. I was a single parent, we were sick all the time because I had no idea what ‘health’ was. My gut was destroyed after too many years of prescribed antibiotics and my child was not far behind. I found myself with little hope. Today, after years of research, I’ve found hope in a ‘menagerie’ of places. October 8, 2001 – the day started like normal but ended in a way I never saw coming. I was called into the conference room at 4pm and received the news… my Project Manager position was being eliminated as a corporate response to the 9/11 attack. I had not seen this coming, it seemed so unfair. I was a single mom. I had no backup. The economy was tanked. What was I to do?
Looking back, I see the blessings from that layoff. I found hope in an unfamiliar place. In a place I knew nothing about nor had learned about in university. I had been in the welfare system for 5 years and was not prepared to go backwards but forwards. If you’re considering a backup plan or diversifying your ability to earn income, consider an industry that provides options, security, time and financial freedom regardless of race, sex and/or educational background. It’s an industry that allows parents to be home to raise their children, that pays mortgages, buy groceries and funds retirement. There is hope and a better way.
